- Check battery cycle counts in the DJI Fly/Pilot app before money changes hands — intelligent flight batteries fade with cycles and age, and replacements for some models cost $100+ each
- Ask to see flight logs (synced in the DJI app) — they reveal total airtime, hard landings, and error history far more honestly than the seller's description
- Insist the seller unbinds the aircraft from their DJI account and confirm you can activate it on yours before completing the deal — an account-locked drone is a paperweight
- Inspect gimbal, arms, and props for crash evidence: stress marks near arm hinges, a gimbal that drifts or vibrates, or mismatched props all signal a hard history
- Verify Remote ID: drones that require FAA registration must broadcast Remote ID, which recent DJI models do via firmware — update to current firmware and confirm before flying

How many battery cycles is too many on a used DJI drone?
DJI rates its batteries for roughly 200 charge cycles before meaningful capacity loss. Under 50 cycles is nearly new; 100–150 is fine if the app shows healthy cell status; past 200, price in replacements. Battery age matters too — packs that sat fully charged for months degrade regardless of cycles.
Do I need to register a used DJI drone with the FAA?
If it weighs 250 grams or more, yes — registration is $5 for three years at FAADroneZone, and the drone must broadcast Remote ID. Sub-250g models like the Mini line are exempt from registration for purely recreational flying, which is a big reason used Minis hold value. Any commercial use requires Part 107 certification and registration regardless of weight.
Why does account unbinding matter so much?
DJI drones activate against the owner's DJI account. If the seller doesn't remove the aircraft from their account, you can hit activation locks, lose warranty/service access, and in the worst case be unable to fly after a firmware update. Do the unbind-and-reactivate handoff together before you part with the money.
