Is My Drone Worth Repairing? Gimbal, Arm, Battery & Camera Repair Costs vs. Value
A cracked arm on a three-year-old mini and a dead gimbal on a cinema rig are different decisions. Put the repair quote next to the live value of the working aircraft and the answer is usually obvious.

Every drone owner eventually holds a damaged aircraft and a repair quote and asks the same question. The right way to answer it is arithmetic: what is the working aircraft worth on the used market, what does the repair cost, and what would the aircraft fetch unrepaired as parts or a project. The first number is live below. The second we can only give as industry-typical ranges — repair pricing varies by model, shop and region and is not something this site measures. The third is usually a fraction of the first.
Step one: what is the working aircraft worth?
| Type | Median asking | Lowest | Highest | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Camera | $829 | $194 | $3,889 | 144 |
| Mini & sub-250g | $344 | $141 | $1,159 | 97 |
| Enterprise & inspection | $6,547 | $1,279 | $211,300 | 25 |
| FPV & racing | $169 | $139 | $1,051 | 23 |
| Cinema & pro | $1,879 | $999 | $3,999 | 22 |
| Other | $1,049 | $399 | $7,800 | 8 |
| Agriculture & spray | $22,620 | $6,500 | $22,999 | 3 |
Find your category, then narrow it by brand and model on the value guide. That median is your ceiling: a repair that costs more than the difference between the repaired value and the as-is value is not worth doing.
| Brand | Median asking | Lowest | Highest | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI | $719 | $139 | $22,999 | 294 |
| SwellPro | $1,099 | $987 | $3,487 | 6 |
| Autel Robotics | $2,069 | $899 | $211,300 | 5 |
| Potensic | $270 | $179 | $306 | 5 |
Step two: typical repair costs by fault
The figures in this table are industry-typical ranges gathered from manufacturer service pricing and independent repair shops. They are not measured on this site and will vary by model, region and the shop you use. Get a written quote.
| Fault | Typical scope | Industry-typical cost | Worth it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gimbal (consumer mini / camera class) | Gimbal and camera module replaced as a unit; recalibration | Low hundreds of dollars at an independent shop; more at the manufacturer | The aircraft is a current or one-generation-old model with healthy batteries. |
| Gimbal (cinema / enterprise) | Camera or gimbal assembly replacement; often manufacturer-only | High hundreds to low thousands depending on payload | Almost always, given the aircraft's value — unless the airframe is also damaged. |
| Arm or motor | Arm assembly with motor and ESC; frame check for hidden cracks | Tens to low hundreds per arm on consumer aircraft | The frame is otherwise sound and the crash did not reach the gimbal. |
| Shell / frame | Upper or lower shell; often reveals further damage | Low hundreds, rising quickly if the core board is involved | Only on aircraft that are worth a multiple of the quote. |
| Battery | Replacement — flight batteries are not economically repairable | Tens to a few hundred per battery depending on class | Always replace rather than repair; a swollen battery is a fire risk, not a project. |
| Camera sensor / lens | Module replacement; sometimes the whole gimbal | Similar to a gimbal repair | As for the gimbal. |
| Main board / IMU / compass | Board-level repair or replacement; may require re-activation | Wide range; often close to the aircraft's used value | Rarely on consumer aircraft; ask the shop for an as-is offer instead. |
Step three: the repair-or-replace test
- Take the live median for your model and condition from the value guide. Call it V.
- Get a written repair quote. Call it R.
- Estimate the as-is value: what a buyer would pay for the aircraft as parts or a project. On consumer aircraft this is typically a small fraction of V; on cinema and enterprise aircraft the payload alone may hold most of it.
- Repair if V minus the as-is value is comfortably more than R and the aircraft is still supported by firmware and Remote ID. Otherwise sell as-is, honestly described, and put the money toward a replacement.
Faults that change the answer
- Water damage. Salt or fresh, a submerged aircraft is a parts donor. Corrosion continues after it dries.
- Repeated crashes. A second gimbal replacement on the same airframe is usually the point at which the money is better spent on a newer aircraft.
- Discontinued firmware. If the manufacturer has stopped updating the model, a repaired aircraft is worth less than the table suggests and may need a Remote ID module on top.
- Bound accounts. A repair that requires re-activation will fail if the aircraft is still bound to a previous owner's account. Sort that first.
If you decide to sell as-is, list it as such with clear photos of the damage and a note on what still works. Damaged aircraft with a good battery set, remote and accessories sell — buyers who repair for a living are looking for exactly that.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a DJI gimbal repair cost?
- It depends on the model and whether you use DJI or an independent shop. Expect low hundreds of dollars on a mini or camera-class aircraft; these are industry-typical figures, not values measured on this site. Get a written quote.
- Is it worth repairing a drone with a cracked arm?
- Usually yes on a supported model with healthy batteries, because arm repairs are among the cheapest. Have the shop check the frame for hidden cracks before you approve it.
- Can a swollen drone battery be repaired?
- No. Replace it and dispose of the old one at a battery recycling point. A swollen lithium battery is a fire hazard.
- Should I use the manufacturer or an independent shop?
- For aircraft under a care plan, the manufacturer. For out-of-plan consumer aircraft, a reputable independent shop is often cheaper and faster. For enterprise payloads, the manufacturer or an authorised centre is usually the only option.
- Does a repair lower my drone's resale value?
- A documented repair at an authorised centre costs a modest discount. An undocumented one, discovered in the flight logs, costs the sale.
- What can I get for a drone that doesn't fly?
- As a parts or project listing, a fraction of the working value — but batteries, remotes, chargers and accessories hold value on their own, so list the whole kit.
- Is DJI Care Refresh cheaper than a repair?
- If the plan is active, the fixed replacement fee is usually well below a gimbal or board repair. Check whether your plan is still in force before you get quotes.
- How do I know the shop fixed it properly?
- Ask for a test-flight log and a gimbal calibration report, then fly it yourself: a stable hover, a level horizon and no compass or IMU warnings.
